Information:

Overview and Grades

Your final grade will be out of 650 points, divides as follows: three in-semester exams, worth respectively 80, 100, and 120 points; a 50-point precalculus review test; a homework/quiz grade of 100 points; and a final exam worth 200 points. The final exam will be comprehensive. The typical grading scale will be used to calculate your final grade: scoring 90\% of the 650 points will guarantee you an A-, 80\% for a B-, etc.

Homework and Quizzes

Homework consists of two major components. The first is staying current with the class by reading the sections of the textbook before they are covered in class. An approximate course calendar can be found on my webpage. In addition to being a valuable learning tool, the content of the reading will be the subject of unannounced quizzes occuring sporadically through the semester.

The second component is weekly homework assignments through the online homework site WebWorks. The urls for this are

http://hosted2.webwork.rochester.edu/webwork2/Willamette_math142-02 or http://hosted2.webwork.rochester.edu/webwork2/Willamette_math142-03

depending on if you are in section 2 or 3. You should bookmark these and get in the habit of checking them regularly -- they will serve as the primary course websites. The first homework assignment is an orientation to WebWorks - take this seriously! Learning to use the system early and well will save much frustration during the rest of the semester. Since WebWorks gives you unlimited attempts to answer all questions, there's no reason not to get 100% on all WebWorks homework. Similarly, note that there's no reason to randomly guess at the solutions until you get it right - take the time to learn the material and solve the problem on your own.
